Tredyffrin-Area State Rep. Candidate: End Gerrymandering Now

Letter from Melissa Shusterman (Dem candidate for PA House 157), Tredyffrin Patch, Jan 9, 2018

Gerrymandering has been in the news a lot lately. What is it, and why is it such a problem? How can we fix it?

Every 10 years, a census is taken to determine the population of each state. After this determination, states must redraw their federal and state legislative districts in a process called redistricting or reapportionment. States do this to ostensibly ensure their citizens receive the equal representation they deserve in their state and the federal government. Accordingly, the intent is to make sure that each congressman, state senator and state representative have about the same number of people in their districts and that the districts don’t unnecessarily split up communities. Gerrymandering is a perversion of this process. Gerrymandering is the manipulation of district boundaries to best benefit a political party instead of citizens.

Gerrymandering is rampant in our country. Most states allow the legislature to draw district boundaries in any way they want, leading to the main consideration is how many seats can be won, to ensure that the party in power stays in power, instead of how to give Americans the representation they deserve in government. Gerrymandering allows politicians to pick their voters instead of allowing voters to pick their politicians and circumvent popular will. In 2012, Democratic Congressional candidates won 1.5 million more votes than Republicans, yet fell far short of a majority in the House….

Severance Tax response from Melissa Shusterman, running in the 157th

Phoenixville, Pa. (Schuylkill Township) (October 4, 2017)

Time and time again, Representative Kampf and House Republicans have voted on the side of fossil fuel companies and special interests instead of the people of Pennsylvania. They continually oppose a common-sense severance tax. Just today, Rep. Kampf voted to not even debate a severance tax!

What would PA Republicans like Rep. Kampf rather do than pass a severance tax, which every other major oil/natural gas producing state has? They would rather tax our cellphone and gas bills. They would rather raise the hotel tax. They would rather borrow close to $2 billion. None of these measures help put PA on a path to fiscal stability. Instead, they hurt PA’s credit rating, increase debt, and hurt Pennsylvania families.

Pennsylvania’s constitution says that our “public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations yet to come.” We deserve a severance tax in return for what fossil fuel companies are doing to our state’s environment. A reasonable severance tax would be fair for Pennsylvania and help fix our budget crisis.

I’m running for State Representative in the 157th district because I’m tired of all the nonsense in Harrisburg. I would vote for a severance tax, not for more taxes on Pennsylvania families. I wouldn’t support borrowing billions of dollars against our state’s future. Those kinds of measures are ridiculous.

We need more common sense in Harrisburg.

About Melissa Shusterman: Melissa is not a career politician; rather she’s a passionate citizen who loves her community and is fed up with the political gridlock in Harrisburg. As Representative, Melissa will fight to protect our seniors, put Pennsylvania on the path to fiscal responsibility, and put an end to the Keystone tests. Melissa has the business and life experience, commitment to our community, and new ideas needed to make an effective, no-nonsense legislator who will make our district and state a better place. She’ll fight for us because she is one of us. Melissa will not be pushed around by party leaders or special interests. Instead she will listen to our community and her conscience. Throughout her campaign Melissa will engage in lively dialogue across our district to ensure our concerns are heard.
