State and local police attacked the protesters after they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge, named for a Confederate general, KKK leader, and later US Senator. The march didn't reach Montgomery but resonates in history. 8 International Women's Day International Women's Day March 8, 2026 Historical note: The Equal Rights Amendment was passed by the US House and Congress and Senate in 1972 and signed by President Richard Nixon. Pennsylvania was the 21st state to ratify it, also in 1972. However, ratification by the 50 states stalled just short of the 3/4 needed to add the Amendment to the US Constitution. In 1971, Pennsylvania added to its constitution Article I § 28. Prohibition against denial or abridgment of equality of rights because of sex: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania because of the sex of the individual." How tragedy inspires reform: Frances Perkins witnessed the blaze, with fire escapes collapsing and fire ladders inadequately high. 47 workers leaped to their deaths from the top floors. The previous year, these same workers had fought for and won a 54 hour (!) work week and other benefits. Perkins became the secretary of a committee to study reforms. Perkins helped draft a comprehensive set of laws to protect workers. She work in New York until she was asked by FDR to serve as his Secretary of Labor. She is responsible for many of the protections and benefits for workers that we take for granted today. 29	30	31 Equal Pay Day Equal Pay Day March 31, 2026 If you're a woman in the US, your earnings have finally caught up with what men were paid last year. US women on average still earn under 80% of what men are paid. From https://pay-equity.org/day.html/: This date symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. Tuesday was selected to represent how far into the next work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color.
