Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, 1911: beginning of the modern US labor movement
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, 1911: beginning of the modern US labor movement
March 25, 2024
March 25, 1911, a tragic blaze in a New York city sweat shop killed 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women and girls.
How tragedy inspires reform: Frances Perkins witnessed the blaze, with fire escapes collapsing and fire ladders inadequately high. 47 workers leaped to their deaths from the top floors. The previous year, these same workers had fought for and won a 54 hour (!) work week and other benefits. Perkins became the secretary of a committee to study reforms. Perkins helped draft a comprehensive set of laws to protect workers. She work in New York until she was asked by FDR to serve as his Secretary of Labor. She is responsible for many of the protections and benefits for workers that we take for granted today.

Equal Pay Day
Equal Pay Day
March 31, 2024
If you're a woman in the US, your earnings have finally caught up with what men were paid last year. US women on average still earn under 80% of what men are paid. From https://pay-equity.org/day.html/: This date symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. Tuesday was selected to represent how far into the next work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color.
