What do Joe Biden, John F. Kelly, and John McCain have in common? They and/or their sons were insulted by Donald Trump. Why? Because of military service.
Biden’s late son Beau served in Iraq. General Kelly’s son Robert was killed in Afghanistan. Senator McCain fought in the Vietnam War and spent 6 years in captivity.
In an astounding role for a US Commander in Chief, Trump (who attended a military academy but avoided serving in the military because of a reported bone spur) has insulted all who have served in the military, all who have died serving their country, and all who were ever captured on the battlefield.
See the shameful details in Jeffrey Goldberg, “Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’,” The Atlantic, 9/3/20. In sum, “The president believes that nothing is worth doing without the promise of monetary payback, and that talented people who don’t pursue riches are ‘losers.'”
Joe Biden has made some choice rejoinders. See “Biden Slaps Trump Over Reported Insults To American Troops, The National Memo, 9/4/20, and the CNN video linked there. A couple of his remarks:
“If the article is true, and it appears to be based on other things he has said, it is absolutely damnable, it is a disgrace.”
“President Trump has demonstrated he has no sense of service, no loyalty to any cause other then himself.”
See the two stories and video as linked above. They are revealing of the qualities that both candidates bring to the race for president.
