News release, Rep. Melissa Shusterman, April 15, 2019

HARRISBURG, April 15 – State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester/Montgomery, today announced her appointment as secretary of the House Judiciary Committee.

This appointment will add to a number of leadership roles Shusterman has undertaken since becoming a freshman representative, including deputy whip for the House Democratic Caucus, chair of the Sub-Committee on Arts and Entertainment in the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee, and member of the Aging and Older Adult Services Committee and Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Caucus.

“All of the committees I have been appointed to serve on this session deal with issues that affect people’s everyday lives and the Judiciary Committee is no different,” Shusterman said. “As secretary of the committee, I look forward to building on legislation that will increase overall public safety and fight for the welfare of residents and those who protect it.”

The Judiciary Committee reviews bills relating to law enforcement and corrections. It has oversight over a number of state agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police, Attorney General’s Office, Department of Corrections, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing.

As the first freshman to earn the title of deputy whip, Shusterman said she and her fellow first-term representatives are energized and determined to make a difference in Harrisburg. “I look forward to using these assignments to work with my colleagues in a bipartisan way to meet the needs of my community,” said Shusterman.

Shusterman further noted residents can stay up-to-date with her work on committees and legislative agenda by signing up for email updates through her website, www.pahouse.com/Shusterman.
