In November 2020 Joe Biden carried Chester County by about 54,000 votes and a margin of 17%. In November 2021, the 4 Dem candidates for countywide row officers each won by around 32,000 votes and a margin of about 28%. Races as close as .5% are automatically recounted in Pennsylvania, so the 2020 margin in Chesco was about 34 times the automatic recount level. With such huge losing margins, the local losing party could be expected to reassess its outreach to voters and its issues.

The following analysis (image from PA Dept. of State) shows that instead of doing some real soul-searching, the R party is wasting the time of courts, misleading their own voters, and plotting ways to take away the right to vote of people who don’t vote for them:

The election wasn’t stolen, and Chester County’s Gordon Eck knows it

by Kurt Jaworski, East Bradford (Daily Local News, 12/18/21)

Chester County Republican Party Chair Gordon Eck, always eager to employ vivid metaphors in making questionable political hay, has done it again. Eck says the American voting system is likened to a hospital, one literally falling apart: “the lights flickered, the suction machine stopped working…” a real mess. He tells us that “the patient (that is the GOP voter) has been informed (of these failings) and is visibly upset.” Hmm…”Visibly upset?” that’s quite an understatement. In truth, millions have been stoked to violence when–for the first time in American history–an election-losing president refused to concede, claimed the election was stolen, and then attacked the vote itself. By repeatedly bellowing things like “I (actually) won by a lot – they took something from us – the greatest scandal in history” he built a post-election insurrectionist mob determined to reinstall him at the cost of our democracy.

In Eck’s drive to drag our state and our county onto the GOP train of “It’s not over until we win” initiated by a twice-impeached, disgraced overlord, the Republican Chair hangs his hat on the relative handful of imperfections that humans generate in any large-scale operation. “Machine mutilated ballots and defective thumb drives” are not the stuff of results-changing fraud, Dr. Eck. Who would agree with this observation? Well, after hearing pleas backed with such scant evidence, 60 courts, sometimes angrily, dismissed such “Hail Marys” as unworthy of any sort of judicial intervention. Former Attorney General William Barr likewise stated–for the record– that he saw no evidence of fraud worthy of further investigation. The loser in 2020 was simply creamed under an 84-million vote tsunami.

Case closed. Or is it?

Months before November 2020, our ears burned and our stomachs churned when repeatedly assaulted with the whining utterance: “If I lose, it was rigged.” When the Election Day hammer did come down, Rudy Giuliani in a brainstorm suggested: “Just say that we won.” And thus, while still waiting for mail ballots to be counted (here in PA and elsewhere), The Big Lie was born. Now the ex-president is more popular than ever with the passionately, but falsely, aroused, portion who believe that violence – that they would join– might be necessary to “restore America.” Talk about “Making America Great Again,” why, clearly, we are on track for installing party-preferred leaders at the point of a gun. So much progress in so little time.

But there’s more, more that comes under the heading “Every problem looks like an opportunity.” In the case of the Republican Party, The Big Lie begot hundreds of state-level voting law changes built specifically to disenfranchise opposition voters, along with provisions that would allow Republican-controlled state legislatures to override the will of the people by selecting their own slate of electors. Additionally, the Party has been engaged in a full court press to politicize election posts that formerly had been non-partisan. The Party cry went out: “No more Brad Raffenspergers,” as this Secretary of State in Georgia simply refused to conjure the 12,000 votes that the loser had demanded of him to flip the state his way. Oh my.

So please remember, the duplicity wrapped within noble-sounding phrases like “voting integrity” and “protecting each sacred vote,” is but self-serving word play when spoken by those eager to embrace winning results without delay, while demanding endless audits and disenfranchising laws when they lose.
