The historian Heather Cox Richardson, in her Aug. 6 Letters from an American, provides valuable background reading on the back-and-forth history of voting rights in this country. Even though the Supreme Court has had a negative influence and “Republican senators have announced their opposition to any voting rights bill, so any law that gets through will have to get around a Senate filibuster, which cannot be broken without 10 Republican senators,” she still has hope that the For the People Act or the John Lewis Voting Rights Act will soon pass. “Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part.”
