Our country is a 200+ year old grand experiment in representative democracy. Our founding fathers created a new type of government with the Constitution enacted in 1789, and Americans have been debating the parameters of shared power between the Federal and State governments, and their relationship to businesses and citizens ever since.
Most of us grew up with the belief that the United States is the best country in the world, with the most advanced form of government. According to our ideal, America is the perfect balance of freedom and liberty for individuals and businesses alike, with government providing a check on business excess and a safety net for the poor and disadvantaged. At the heart of it all, is the belief that through free and fair elections, we the citizens are in charge of the direction of the country.
It has become increasingly apparent how far away from this ideal is the reality of our broken democracy. Our political process has wide ranging corruption because of the pervasive influence of dark money and big donors. Powerful lobbyists with deep pockets have undue influence on legislatures in Harrisburg and Washington, DC. Political parties in power have distorted voting district boundaries to ensure staying in office….
