In an unusual turnabout, Chesco Sheriff Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh, a Republican, will herself face a jury in 2020, her last year in the office that she first occupied in 2000. The case results from County Controller Margaret Reif (pictured here), a Democrat elected in 2017, charging that excessive overtime payments were made from Welsh’s office to an officer under her supervision. Welsh will be succeeded by Fredda Maddox, a Democrat elected last month, who will take office next month.

For the latest, see “Trial date set for dispute of overtime pay to Chesco sheriff’s boyfriend” by Michael P. Rellahan, Daily Local News, 12/6/19.

“Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part.”
