In an unusual turnabout, Chesco Sheriff Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh, a Republican, will herself face a jury in 2020, her last year in the office that she first occupied in 2000. The case results from County Controller Margaret Reif (pictured here), a Democrat elected in 2017, charging that excessive overtime payments were made from Welsh’s office to an officer under her supervision. Welsh will be succeeded by Fredda Maddox, a Democrat elected last month, who will take office next month.
