Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Stay-at-Home Order has forced the closure of ‘non-essential’ businesses and the layoffs of millions of workers, But there are those that have continued to work and serve in an ‘essential capacity’, often at greater risk. To these critical workers, the Chester County Democratic Committee recognizes and salutes them.

During this period of monumental disruption, the disparities in our society become even more apparent. Those deemed to be “Essential” are often the lowest paid and least respected.  They have formed unions to negotiate better wages and benefits, safety procedures and training programs. The Chester County Democratic Committee recognizes them and supports Organized Labor:

  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW Local #614 and Local #126
Bus/Train Operators and Maintenance Personnel
  • Transport Workers Union (TWU Local 234)
  • Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA)
Government Workers
  • American Federation of State, County and Municipal Workers (AFSCME District Council 88) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU Local 668)
Critical Manufacturing
  • United Steelworkers of America (USW Local 1165)
Essential Construction, Service and Maintenance
  • Plumbers (Local 690), Laborers’ (District Council Of Philadelphia And Vicinity Local #57, Local #135, Local #332 and Local #413), HVAC (Sheetmetal Workers Local 19), Steamfitters (Local 420), Boilermakers (Local 13), Painters and Allied Trades (District Council 21), Insulators (Local #14), Electricians (IBEW Local #654 & Local #98),  Ironworkers (Local #401), Operating Engineers, Carpenters (Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Local 164)

Several Unions representing Essential Workers joined together to contribute to the  Philadelphia Joint Board, Workers United with their food pantry which has been feeding hundreds of working families.
