In describing the “Gut and replacement of SB222,” FairDistrictsPA describes how a bill known as LACRA, developed over many years with input from respected non-profits such as the League of Women Voters in a drive to prevent the kind of politically-motivated gerrymandering that made our state a national laughing-stock, has been sabotaged by an underhanded ploy of the PA Republican leadership.
“Senator Katie Muth asked why a bill with 25 co-sponsors would not be given a vote in its entirety, and pointed out that LACRA was discussed in over 200 constituent meetings, while the proposed amendment had not been read or discussed by PA voters. There was no response to her comments. The amendment was passed on party lines, then the bill itself was passed out of committee. The entire meeting took 23 minutes. Discussion and vote on SB 222 took less than 10.”
Please keep an eye on this one. After Gov. Wolf’s expected veto, it will likely come back to try to bite us as a constitutional amendment!
