Say NO to Judicial Gerrymandering: Town Hall on Judicial Districts
Say NO to Judicial Gerrymandering: Town Hall on Judicial Districts
January 6, 2021 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
In the 2019-2020 session, the PA General Assembly passed a constitutional amendment that would empower our state legislature to create judicial districts for PA higher courts. Candidates for Supreme Court and other appeals courts would be elected by voters in these districts rather than running statewide. If that amendment passes again early this next session, it could go to a public vote as soon as the 2021 primary election. In effect, the judicial district amendment would undermine constitutional checks and balances among our branches of state government and would open the door to a new, unprecedented version of gerrymandering. No other state allows legislators as much power in drawing judicial districts. The bill was pushed through without public hearings, expert testimony or any hint of due diligence, with just minutes spent in discussion in both House and Senate committees. We will need to speak out strongly in opposition before the bill is hurried through again early in the new year. Join the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, Fair Districts PA and Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts: Say NO to Judicial Gerrymandering: Town Hall on Judicial DistrictsCarol Kuniholm, Chair of Fair Districts PA, will give a presentation followed by a panel discussion with Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts President Deborah Gross and others. January 6, 2021, 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/say-no-to-judicial-gerrymandering-a-town-hall -- A Zoom link will be sent to you the day of the event.

Breakfast Briefing on Judicial Gerrymandering
Breakfast Briefing on Judicial Gerrymandering
January 8, 2021 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Virtual
How does Harrisburg get away with pushing through a bill – without public hearings – potentially undermining constitutional checks and balances among the state government? This is what happens when the balance of power is out of alignment in the State, and Represent PA is committed to keeping you up to date on issues that affect the state.
Join Represent PA on January 8 at 8:30 am for a public education program about judicial districts. Carol Kuniholm, Chair of Fair Districts PA (FDPA) will present and lead a discussion on the issue. In addition to describing the problem, Carol will discuss FDPA’s strategy in Harrisburg and will provide suggestions for we can advocate for change. Carol will be joined by Deborah Gross, President of Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts. The briefing will be moderated by Christine Jacobs, Represent PA’s Executive Director.

January 11, 2021 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Zoom (Virtual Meeting)
A Citizen’s Perspective: The State of America’s Children: Child Poverty & Related AfflictionsJanuary 11 @ 7:30 pm – 9 pm via Zoom. Anyone wishing to attend, please send an email requesting the link to Jerry Henige at [email protected]. A society should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable … and most valuable … members: its children. By this measure, America is falling shamefully short. Here in the wealthiest nation on earth, the proportion of federal dollars invested in children has fallen to its lowest level in a decade. The shameful state of our children is not inevitable … it is a choice. We have the resources … we just choose to invest them elsewhere. As a result of our continued failings, the state of our children is unjust, unacceptable, and short-sighted. Please join us as we take a deeper look at how we fail our children and what can … and should … be done to address this.

People's Town Hall on the threat of judicial gerrymandering
People's Town Hall on the threat of judicial gerrymandering
January 21, 2021 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
People's Town Hall on House Bill 38 (HB38). HB38 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would disenfranchise every single Pennsylvania voter by changing the way we elect appellate court judges in this state and give the General Assembly unchecked power over who is elected to our courts. This constitutional amendment is being rammed through the legislature. Education and advocacy are the keys to fighting back and making sure it doesn’t pass. Please join the Judicial Independence Project of Pennsylvania Table (JIPPA) for an educational Town Hall about House Bill 38. Thursday, 1/21, 5:30 - 6:30pm Zoom Event Link: http://bit.ly/JIPPATownhallHB38 is an unprecedented attack on the independence of our state’s highest courts. HB38 would change how we elect judges and justices to our appellate courts, including our Supreme Court. If this amendment becomes part of our Constitution, we will elect our judges from judicial districts instead of statewide, as we do now. Those districts would be drawn by members of the General Assembly, meaning Pennsylvania’s voters would no longer have a say in the selection or retention of every appellate judge who would be the ultimate and final say on cases about our lives and communities. We must keep our courts free from the influence of partisan attacks that seek to undermine their independence and ability to act as an impartial system of checks and balances.
