A Historic 75,525 Votes (Not Counting Provisional Ballots) Were Cast In Democratic Presidential Race

West Chester, PA (June 6, 2020) – Chester County Democrats pivot their energies to November as Primary results await certification from Chester County Voter Services. Joseph R. Biden for President, Josh Shapiro for Attorney General, Joe Torsella for State Treasurer and Chrissy Houlahan for Congress will top a full slate of Federal and State candidates on the November 3 ballot. Carolyn Comitta earned a spot after handily winning a three-person race for the 19th District State Senate being vacated by retiring State Senator Andy Dinniman.

“We’re accustomed to knowing results from around the county and across the Commonwealth on Primary Night,” admitted Dick Bingham, Chair of the Chester County Democratic Committee, “but since this is the first time we have vote-by-mail on a historic scale, it’s important to remember that an accurate count is far more important than a quick count. We look forward to celebrating the nominations of Democrats up and down the ballot in every corner of Pennsylvania in the coming days — including our two candidates for State Senate, nine candidates for State Representative, and three PA State Row Office candidates.”

Excitement, motivation and glee from Democrats around the county arrived three weeks before Primary Day when the Daily Local News banner headline proclaimed Chester County flips to ‘blue.’ Registration on Primary Day had 149,017 Democrats compared to 148,293 Republicans. The gap is expected to widen as Democrats encourage voter registration this summer.

As results have been tabulated in 12-hour shifts at Chester County Voter Services, all six State Representatives who took office in 2019 easily won their primary bids. They are (in alphabetical order) Carolyn Comitta, Kristine Howard, Danielle Friel Otten, Christina Sappey, Melissa Shusterman and Dan Williams. Newcomers Paul Friel, Anton Andrew, and Rich Ruggieri won their districts. Current reported results in the two districts that straddle Chester and Delaware Counties unofficially indicate Anton Andrew in the 160th State Representative District and John Kane in the Senate 9th District as presumptive winners.
