This obituary of Sam Armstrong, a long-time committee person for Lower Oxford East, has been lightly edited from the words of Barton Reese, Head of School, Centreville School where Sam was on the faculty. A fuller obituary can be found here.
It is with extreme sadness I write to inform you that Sam Armstrong passed away October 6, 2017 at the age of 59. From speaking with Sam’s wife Jacey, I know that he was “at peace and surrounded by his family.” While his illness was extraordinarily serious and his passing imminent, it is still extremely difficult to process.
Sam’s tenure at Centreville and Centreville Layton spanned 15+ years. In that time, he touched the hearts and minds of many students and their families. He served our community as a faculty member, department chair, and division head. Sam’s wit, his charm, his intellect, and his ability to connect with people (literally anybody) melded perfectly to produce not only an amazing teacher, but an amazing human.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at Centreville Layton School on October 21, at 1:00 PM. For more details please follow this link. If you have cards or gifts, continue to bring them to school and we will be sure to deliver them.
Our community is now without one very special member. And, as a community, we grieve. While we grieve his loss, as we must, let’s celebrate Sam’s amazing spirit and zest for life, and take comfort that he is and forever will be present in our hearts and on our campus.
