Still committed to serving citizens
Daily Local News, February 9, 2010
Several months ago, I made the personal decision to not run for re-election in 2010 for the 156th State Representative seat in the state House. Since then, it has come to my attention that many people thought that I had quit and that I am no longer in office. Although I will not be seeking a third term, I remain committed to providing quality service to the residents of our district and maintaining an active presence in the community throughout my tenure, which will end Nov. 30, 2010.
As in the past, my calendar is chock-full of events and activities, including community presentations such as Identity Theft for seniors and Safe Surfing on the Internet for children; awards to veterans, firefighters, and Eagle Scouts; chamber dinners and recognition of outstanding citizens; school tours of the state Capitol for West Chester elementary students; and my personal favorite — reading to kindergartners.
Since we are once again in the throes of the budget process, I am spending much of my time in Harrisburg attending budget hearings, committee meetings, and policy roundtables.
Undoubtedly, this year will be as difficult as last as we decide which programs must be cut in order to hold down our costs. I will urge responsible spending that funds the programs and services you rely on. However, I will argue to reduce the number of capitol staff, repeal the legislative COLA, and return to the General Fund the $201.5 million of caucus reserves. It is our duty to cut wasteful spending.
Please call my office if you need assistance with PennDOT forms, Property Tax/Rent Rebates, LIHEAP applications, or SEPTA senior passes. My district office is located at 107 E. Chestnut St. in West Chester borough and is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please stop in or call 610-696-4990, visit my Web site www.pahouse.com/BSmith, or send me an e-mail RepBSmith@pahouse.net. We are ready to cut through any red tape you might encounter when dealing with our state-related agencies.
On a personal note, I want to thank you for your support and kindness shown to me over the past several years. Truly, it has been my great honor and privilege to serve the people of this district, and I look forward to working with you, and for you, until Nov. 30.
