Specter endorsed by state Democratic Party

LANCASTER—Nine months after leaving the Republican Party, Senator Arlen Specter won the formal backing of Pennsylvania Democrats Saturday, when he garnered more than three-quarters of the votes cast by state committee members gathered here for their endorsement meeting.
The endorsement amounted to an enormous organizational victory for Specter, who tirelessly courted the rank-and-file of his new party. Though his primary opponent, Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7), was never expected to win the endorsement, there was enough suspense that things still seemed in doubt until the vote-rich Philadelphia delegation went heavily for Specter. The former Philadelphia prosecutor and longtime Senate incumbent took the stage to an almost rock-star reception, with chants of “Arlen! Arlen!†resonating through the crowd. …
