Dem endorsement may elude candidates for governor

HARRISBURG, Pa.—A rule that made the state Democratic Party’s endorsement harder to get in crowded primary races will likely prevent any of the four gubernatorial candidates from winning it, but U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter is hoping for a vote of confidence from his new party in his bid for a sixth term.
The rule, which Gov. Ed Rendell advocated and the Democratic State Committee approved in 2004, changed the threshold for endorsements from a simple majority vote of the state committee to a two-thirds majority.
State Democratic chairman T.J. Rooney predicted it will all but rule out an endorsement in the gubernatorial nomination race when the state committee meets in Lancaster on Saturday because the vote will be divided four ways. Rendell cannot seek re-election this year because of term limits. …
