Awe and Shock
email from PA-06 Congressional candidate Doug Pike, 11/12/09
As I sat and watched history in the making this past Saturday, as congressmen and women from across the country cast a historic vote to reform health care, I was filled with both awe and shock.Â
I was awed by the humanity of the moment, which was best summed up by Republican Joseph Cao – the lone Republican vote for this bill – when he said that he “had to make a decision of conscience based on the needs of the people in my district.†This display of human compassion, with indifference to party affiliation, and should serve as a model for how government can work to best serve the needs of those it governs. Â
Yet I was shocked that this bill was amended at the last minute to restrict a woman’s right to choose. Our elected representatives had an opportunity to ensure that men, women and children who have been left behind by our health care system finally got a fair shake. Instead, women got a raw deal.Â
This anti-choice amendment should not have been approved in the House, it should be rejected in the Senate, and it should NOT be in the final bill.Â
These are my values, and I’m running for Congress so that I can take these values to Washington. When I get there, my voice will be heard loud and clear – a woman has the right to choose. Period.
I’m working day and night running for Congress, and today I’m asking for your help.
Please help me win by contributing $50 or $25 today. Together we can change Washington.Â
Thank you for all that you do.Â
Sincerely,
Doug
Democratic Candidate for Congress

As a Registered Democrat, I too was in shock at this bill. Doug – worrying about the Stupak amendment is like re-arranging the Deckchairs on the Titanic.
The bill is a disastrous starting point. We need to make it a good bill and then the people will trust us to make good decisions on the peripheral parts of Healthcare. The polls show exactly how good this bill is. So I say to you – focus on the important issues and get this bill re-written from the beginning, otherwise History will deal us a a Knockout blow in November 2010.
