The Kennedy legacy

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

Let’s Rebuild Pennsylvania Together

email from Joe Hoeffel, 11/4/09

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I spent most of the day at polling locations supporting our Democratic candidates. I congratulate all of our great candidates who stepped forward and ran for office.

The May Democratic Primary for Governor is just a little more than six months away. Our Party and our great Commonwealth is at a crossroads. We will be determining what kind of future we are building for our children trying to make their way in the world.

The next Governor must stand up and speak the truth, even when it is unpopular, if we are going to continue moving the state forward in educating our children, cleaning up our rivers and streams, and providing economic opportunity to all of our state’s residents. We can create jobs for thousands of Pennsylvanians repairing and improving our transportation infrastructure, investing in mass transit, and encouraging the development of livable communities.

While Pennsylvania has already started 256 bridge projects funded by federal stimulus money, we have a long way to go: in 2008, PennDOT rated 8,000 Pennsylvania bridges on state and local roads as structurally deficient and in critical need of repair. The next Governor needs to make the tough decisions required to act.

Throughout my 35 years of public service in Congress, the State House and as a County Commissioner, promoting economic development that provides all people the tools and opportunities to succeed has been my priority. Working on a bi-partisan basis, in Montgomery County we created the first-ever, $105 million county economic development fund, which is already working to revitalize older communities and downtowns, and attracting good-paying local jobs.

As Governor, I will make repairing our bridges and highways and expanding mass transit a top priority by tolling I-80 and raising revenue through incremental increases in the gasoline tax, because I understand that protecting the health and safety of our citizens on our roads is the responsibility of our government.

I need your help to get my message out. Please contribute today so I have the funds necessary to wage my campaign.
